Monthly HELOC Originations (non-seasonally adjusted)

The home-equity line of credit (HELOC) market continues to expand. As equity continues to rise and homeowners take advantage of still very low interest rates, the pace of HELOC originations increased. There were more than 93,140 HELOC loans originated in January 2016--an 8.7 percent increase over January 2015. Subprime originations have increased versus the same month last year but at a slower rate, rising 2.2 percent in the number of loans taken out, and remained a small share of total HELOCs originated at 1.37 percent.
