After paying high prices for purchased servicing and offering well below market origination rates during the last decade, it's no surprise that many thrifts that followed that formula now lie in the RTC's warehouse. And billions of dollars worth of servicing that those institutions used to own are on the market today. Many thrifts that previously were buyers of servicing "are now being sold through the RTC," says Chuck Klein, managing director of the Houston brokerage firm Charbonneau-Klein, Inc. Hunter Wolcott, president of Miami's Reserve Financial Management Corporation, estimates that thrifts that accounted for 20 percent of 1988's servicing purchases are in RTC conservatorship today.
